Order of Worship October 17, 2021

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

UJCC Sunday House Worship Service

October 17, 2021 * 21st Sunday After Pentecost * Generosity Movement

The Peace of Christ be with you! You are invited to use the following prayers & order of worship as we lift our hearts to God together!

We invite you to prepare for worship by lighting a candle. May it be a reminder that, wherever you are, is your sanctuary in this time of worship. May it be a reminder that you are inviting God’s spirit into your midst and that you are seeking to honor God in your worship.

“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.”

-Maya Angelou

Opening Prayer

God of our hopes and dreams,

we are empty, and long to be filled;

we are hungry, and long to be fed;

we are lost, and long to be found.

Gather us into your love,

and pick up the pieces of our lives,

just as Jesus gathered up the fragments

of the five loaves and two fish

that remained after feeding the five thousand.

Call us anew to eat our fill

and to find our true nourishment in Jesus,

the bread of heaven. Amen.(awa)

Worship Resource: (awa) adapted from The Abingdon Worship Annual 2009, Opening Prayer, posted on https://cmbs.mennonitebrethren.ca/worship_resources/jesus-feeds-the-multitude/

Luke 9:12-17

The day was drawing to a close, and the twelve came to him and said, ‘Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place.’ 13But he said to them, ‘You give them something to eat.’ They said, ‘We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.’ 14For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, ‘Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.’ 15They did so and made them all sit down. 16And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Questions for Reflection:

1. Who is a generosity model in your life?

2. What is one way you’d like to take a risk in being more generous?

  • To the church?

  • To those you see everyday?

  • To those in the wider community and world?
